Cannabis Preventing Weight

Trying to lose weight, but you’re stuck at a plateau? Researchers Yann Le Strat and Bernard Le Foll from the French Institute of Health and Medical Research suggest that regular cannabis use may be the ultimate way to prevent weight gain.

Some point to the similarities between the runner’s high (which is all about the endocannabinoids) and the THC buzz as to why cannabis works to maintain a healthy weight.

“When you have runner’s high, you have feelings very similar to those you would feel if you were smoking marijuana: sedation, analgesia, mild happiness, the loss of the sensation of time and a loss of worries. The neurotransmitter system that marijuana hijacks is the cannabinoid system,” says Dr. Arne Dietrich, a cognitive neuroscientist at the American University of Beirut told Runner’s World

Yet, what the data that Le Strat and Le Foll have pulled together demonstrate is that consuming cannabis three times a week is more likely to result in healthy weight levels than not consuming the herb at all. According to the study, the prevalence of obesity for participants who used cannabis three times a week was 14.3 percent, whereas the group who didn’t use the herb at all had a prevalence rate of 22 percent.

“This cross-sectional analysis indicated that despite the evidence that cannabis use stimulates appetite in clinical trials and laboratory studies, cannabis users are actually less likely to be obese than nonusers in the general population.”

Cannabis and Fitness Go Mainstream

recent issue of Men’s Fitness Magazine, a national publication with a distribution of over 600,000 subscribers, is also touting the benefits of mixing cannabis with fitness. Cannabis & Fitness Join Forces

Get Ready for the New Mind/Body Fitness Workout. If you haven’t been keeping up with the vast number of research studies regarding the holistic properties of cannabis and its contributions to wellness, then this may not only delight you, but surprise you as well.

The world’s first cannabis gym will open its doors in San Francisco this November. Power Plant Fitness is a joint venture between Jim McAlpine, founder of 420 Games and Ricky Williams, a retired NFL running back.

In this new fitness paradigm, fitness club members will be encouraged to consume cannabis while exercising. This unique fitness plan aims to give both the mind and body a workout. “Interest is extremely high,” says McAlpine. “People are eager to come away from an era of prohibition and misinformation into an enlightened time where they can live their lives the way they feel is appropriate, without fear of judgment or even worse, going to jail.

Power Plant Fitness will also have a line of cannabis products that promote athletic endurance for sale. Although getting permission to let members smoke cannabis onsite is still pending approval from law authorities, vaping and edibles have already been given the green light. In addition to his new fitness club venture, McAlpine is the brains behind the highly successful 420 Games, an athletic event with posts in California, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon that features a 4.20 mile run, a beer tasting garden, educational lectures and music focusing on the emotional and physical benefits of cannabis.

It’s an awesome thing to see mainstream media writing about us in such a positive light,” McAlpine said in a recent press release, “Another sign that the times are changing for the better.”

Study Shows Cannabis Decreases Aggression Fueled by Alcohol

Dutch scientists from Maastricht University in the Netherlands have discovered that cannabis reduces feelings of anger and hostility provoked by alcohol.

“Tapping the keg of America’s never-ending violence, ‘intoxicated aggression’ spikes precipitously among drinkers, while marijuana snuffs out those same aggressive tendencies.”

Participants were regular users of both alcohol and cannabis who on average consumed 24 units of alcohol a week and used cannabis products 4.8 times a week. For the analysis, scientists measured participants’ testosterone and cortisol levels while under the influence of either substance or placebo to determine the intensity of their aggression.

According to the researchers, “Alcohol intoxication increased subjective aggression in the alcohol group. The cannabis group in contrast experienced a reduction in subjective aggression during cannabis intoxication.”

This new study serves as important news for those who suffer from the negative consequences of alcohol. Cannabis can be a great tool to calm nerves.

Cannabis in Alzheimer’s Treatment

Scientists at the Salk Institute have recently discovered that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, among other compounds in marijuana can increase the cellular removal of amyloid, a toxic protein found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

David Schubert, Salk Professor and lead writer of the study, told Salk News,

“Although other studies have offered evidence that cannabinoids might be neuroprotective against the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, we believe our study is the first to demonstrate that cannabinoids affect both inflammation and amyloid beta accumulation in nerve cells.”

The THC activates receptors that conduct intercellular signaling in the brain, thus reducing amyloid beta levels and killing off inflammation in the brain. Inflammation is a serious side effect of Alzheimer’s, contributing to the mental and physical health decline in patients.

The study points to the importance of integrating cannabis into treatment of high-risk diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
